Maestro Rolf Bertsch conducts the Civic as we launch the concert performing Karl Jenkins “Stella Natalis”, a work in twelve movements celebrating different aspects of Christmastide – winter, the sleeping child, tidings of peace, thanksgiving – with text sources ranging from Psalms to Carol Barratt. Conveying the Christmas message of peace, goodwill, compassion and a new beginning, Stella natalis (‘star of birth’, ‘star of origin’) draws on an expanded palette of inspiration, including the Old Testament, Zulu text and reference to Hindu gods. Vocal score for solo soprano, mixed choir, female choir, and piano reduction of the instrumental parts. The second half of the program will include many seasonal favorites including the Trumpeter’s Lullaby and the Hallelujah Chorus.
The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant!
