Events Description

The Silver Skate Festival is a 10-day, family-oriented festival in Edmonton’s scenic river valley. Rooted in Dutch winter traditions, the festival combines sport (especially skating), arts and culture, and recreation. Celebrating its 31st anniversary in 2021, the Silver Skate Festival is the longest-running winter festival in Edmonton. Over the years, it has grown in leaps and bounds, from a small skating event to a large-scale, winter extravaganza.

Each year, the festival transforms Hawrelak Park into a winter wonderland with fun for the entire family.

This year due to COVID-19 there will be no formal gathering or typical festival programming, the festival organizers are creating an abundance of DIY winter-friendly experiences and challenges you can safely do with your household or co-hort, on your own time.

Rediscover the joy of that first childhood snowfall or discover that joy for the first time. Feel the breeze on your face as you glide along the city’s largest skating pond while listening to a tuneful compilation of Edmonton-based music.

Marvel at the artistic talent on display in the Waiward Snow Sculpture Garden.

Explore the Folk Trail, visit this year’s Heritage Village installation, and listen to local Indigenous elders’ oral histories via Night Sky ᐋᒋᒧᐃᐧᐣ âcimowin story telling. Grab a Winter Box from one of our local culinary partners and explore Hawrelak Park. See how fast you can skate Silver Skate’s traditional 1km race loop on the pond – can you beat the record for most loops in an hour?

We challenge you to embrace your environment: explore the river valley, go for a skate, make a snow angel, or visit a winter patio. Winter is magic, and the outdoor experiences in our city are limitless.
