The Gordon Sheard Trio is an exciting, dynamic contemporary jazz ensemble that has been stunning audiences with virtuosic performances grounded on strong original compositions for over fifteen years.. The group’s stellar musicians combine their unique voices into a cohesive collective identity born of mutual respect, deep listening to one another, and joyful interaction. Gordon Sheard ( piano, keyboards, composer), Mark Kelso (drums), and George Koller (basses )had been performing together in various situations for a decade prior to the trio’s formation, and their familiarity with each other’s musicality results innear-telepathic intercommunication on the bandstand. This is superbly represented in their début 2025 release, Live and Learn.
Pianist and composer Gordon Sheard has been a stalwart of the Canadian music scene for five decades. He has been a member of Manteca, Rick Shadrach Lazar and the Montuno Police, and the bands of Chuck Mangione, Alain Caron, Liona Boyd, and Eliana Cuevas, among many others. He was the Head of Composition in Humber College’s prestigious music program from 2008 to 2021 and holds a PhD in ethnomusicology. Mark Kelso is one of Canada’s most in-demand drummers for both live performances and recording, and is a three-time Juno nominee for his recordings as a leader. A very small sampling of the very many high-profile musicians he has performed with includes Michael and Randy Brecker, David Clayton-Thomas, Gino Vannelli, Michael Bublé, and Holly Cole. Bassist, composer and producer George Koller is also a first-call musician whose performing and recording credits read like a Who’s Who of first-rate International and Canadian talent, including Peter Gabriel, Holly Cole, Loreena McKennitt, Ian Tyson, David Clayton-Thomas, Phil Woods, The Shuffle Demons, Olivia Newton-John, Chaka Khan, Eddie Harris and numerous others.
