Events Description

Gabor Maté is one of the world’s most trusted authorities on addiction, trauma, and childhood development. For more than a decade, he worked as a physician in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, treating those battling the ravages of addiction. He also dedicated over two decades to family practice and palliative care.

The bestselling author of five books published in 43 languages, including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, Maté has transformed public understanding of how trauma affects both mind and body. Grounded in science, his work offers a compassionate lens on how our experiences, relationships, and social conditions shape our health.

For his ground-breaking medical work and writing he has been awarded the Order of Canada as well as the Civic Merit Award from the City of Vancouver.

His most recent book, The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness and Healing in a Toxic Culture is a New York Times and international bestseller. His next book, Hello Again: A Fresh Start for Parents and their Adult Children is expected to be published in late 2027. Join us for an essential conversation with one of UBC’s most distinguished alumni who has rewritten the narrative on how we understand mental health.
