Electronic Travel Authorization: Canada Adds 13 More Countries to Visa-Free Travel List

In an effort to enhance its immigration programs and services, Canada has announced the inclusion of 13 additional countries in its electronic travel authorization (eTA) program.

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, revealed that travellers from these countries, who have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years or currently possess a valid United States non-immigrant visa, can now apply for an eTA instead of a visa when flying to Canada.

The newly eligible countries for visa-free air travel to Canada are:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Argentina
  • Costa Rica
  • Morocco
  • Panama
  • Philippines
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Seychelles
  • Thailand
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Uruguay

The eTA serves as a digital travel document required for most visa-exempt individuals to travel to or transit through Canada by air. As per the federal government, the application process involves a light-touch, pre-travel screening conducted by Canadian officials. The eTA application costs $7 and is typically approved within minutes, making it a faster and more affordable option for eligible travellers.

By facilitating visa-free travel, the federal government aims to boost tourism, international business, and its economy while also strengthening its relationships with these countries.

“Canada has what the world wants, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to our shores. Expanding the eTA for Canada is a major step toward helping our tourism industry soar to new heights. By streamlining the entry process for international travellers, we send a strong message that Canada is open for business, adventures and unforgettable experiences. This strategic move supports our visitor economy by injecting vitality into our local communities and creating countless job opportunities,” said Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance.

“It is not just about attracting visitors; it is about showcasing the breathtaking landscapes, diverse cultures, and warm hospitality that define Canada. Let us seize this opportunity to place our nation firmly on the global tourism map, all while building an economy that works for everyone.”

The government says the inclusion of these countries in the eTA program will divert a significant number of visa applications, allowing for more efficient processing and benefiting all visa applicants.

Individuals who already possess a valid visa can continue to use it for travel to Canada, while those who are not eligible for an eTA or are traveling to Canada by means other than air will still require a visitor visa.

Since its launch in August 2015, nearly 20.9 million eTAs have been issued. With the expanded eTA program, Canada anticipates an increase of 200,000 visitors from these 13 countries within the next year. Over the course of a decade, the heightened travel is expected to generate approximately $160 million in additional tourism revenue for Canada.
