Eligible residents of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta will receive the first installment of the quarterly Climate Action Incentive (CAI) payment on April 14, 2023, for the fiscal year 2023-24.
CAI payments are paid out to residents of provinces where the federal carbon pollution pricing system applies to help them reduce the cost of the extra regulatory charge on fossil fuels like gasoline and natural gas, known as the fuel charge.
Starting April 1st, the carbon pollution price will increase by $15 per year to $170 per tonne of carbon emissions in 2030. To compensate for this increase, the CAI payments for 2023-24 will be higher than those received in 2022-23.
Eligible single adults in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario will receive a total of $772, $680, $528, and $488, respectively, in the next 12 months in four equal installments.
A family of four will receive a total of $1,544 in Alberta, $1,360 in Saskatchewan, $1,056 in Manitoba, and $976 in Ontario compared to 2022-23 annual payment of $1,079 in Alberta, $1,101 in Saskatchewan, $832 in Manitoba, and $745 in Ontario.
Families in rural and small communities are eligible to receive an extra 10 per cent.
In the 2023-24 fiscal year, residents of these four provinces will receive four equal quarterly payments on April 14, July 14, October 13, 2023, and January 2024.
The payment is not subject to a reduction based on net family income. Eligible residents do not have to apply for CAI payments, as it will be paid automatically by CRA based on their tax return.

New Brunswick will join the federal backstop on carbon pricing on July 1st, and eligible residents will receive payments similar to those in Atlantic Canada. The amount has not yet been announced.
Ottawa says no funds collected are retained by the federal government as approximately 90 per cent of direct proceeds from carbon pollution pricing are returned to residents of those provinces through CAI payments. The other 10 per cent is used to support farmers, small businesses, Indigenous groups, schools, universities, and municipalities.
