Breathing life into the inanimate and giving expression to the inert, the Festival of Animated Objects brings world-class artists to engage and entertain audiences of all ages through the innovative and sophisticated art of storytelling through mask, puppetry and animated objects. Details

3. Creating Newspaper Marionettes

What can you do with piles of newspaper, spools of string and rolls of masking tape? Make a puppet of course! Believing that limitations are the source of ingenuity Ali will coach participants on how to make something wonderful from old news. – Ages 10+ Adults welcome Details

4. Paper Folded Birds

This month WP Puppet Theatre is joining the Festival Of Animated Objects with a free drop-by puppet making workshop! Cut, fold, colour and glue! It’s that easy to make your own feathered friend puppet with fun paper sculpture techniques. Celebrate real or imaginary birds that can sing, squawk or flap their wings. Materials and tools supplied. Join TALES Calgary for our concert “Canada 150: Stories that Transform a Nation” where we’ll celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial in the oral storytelling tradition. Storytellers, poets and musicians will present stories and songs about our nation’s history and diversity. Details

6. Symphonic Sorcery: The Music of Harry Potter

7. Alice’s Wonderland

Alice’s Wonderland is an adaptation of the novel and stories by Lewis Carrol, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Alice Through the Looking Glass. Alice is a 12 year old girl who, while sitting with her sister, falls asleep and enters a wonderland of fanciful characters each adding their own humor and dimension to the adventure. Through all the absurdity and whimsy, Alice learns a great deal about life and growing up in a precarious world. Details

9. The Urban Jungle Book

Michael is a foster child with a vivid imagination. Whenever the world gets a bit much for him, he retreats into the amazing world inside his head, and the people in his life become the characters from his favourite story – The Jungle Book. Details

Cape Breton’s Celtic sensation Ashley MacIsaac and members of The Barra MacNeils join forces with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for Calgary’s hottest party. Eastern Canada meets West in this all-star spectacle featuring traditional Irish dancing and some sizzling fiddling from the Orchestra’s Assistant Concertmaster Donovan Seidle. Details

Celebrate Canada’s 150 th with the coming together of eastern and western music brought to you by the professional Chinese zither (GuZheng) player Vicky Su from the Alberta Chinese Zither Association, along with a collection of talented young musicians. These musicians all come from different ethnic backgrounds and have come together to perform both eastern and western musical pieces to celebrate the birthday of our multi-cultural country. Details

5. 4th Annual Variety Show to Conquer Cancer

Some of Calgary’s best known comedic talent will take the stage for the 4th Annual Variety Show to Conquer Cancer to benefit the Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer, and the Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors. It’s hilarious fun to raise money to support clinical trials and research at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
