This two-day event in Smoky Lake promises a vibrant celebration of Métis culture, featuring various activities such as a homeland hour, an Indigenous fashion show, a jigging competition, and an artisan market.
Metis Crossing, the hosting venue for the festival, is a significant Métis cultural destination in Alberta. Spanning 688 acres of land originally owned by Métis settlers, Meìtis Crossing aims to share the distinct Indigenous story of the Métis people with the world and encourage personal reflection and connection for all visitors.
Metis Fest is an opportunity for Albertans and visitors to come together and honour Métis traditions, history, and culture.
The highlight of the festival will be on Saturday, with events taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Attendees can look forward to an all-ages jigging competition, interpretive programs, on-stage showcases, including an Indigenous Fashion Show and performances by the Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers.
The festival will also feature an artisan market showcasing the work of talented Metis artists and creators.
Saturday evening will be marked by performances from the Métis Child and Family Dancers, as well as Alex Kusturok and JJ Lavallee. Regional showcases from each of the six MNA regions will once again shine a spotlight on the abundant talent within the Métis community.
Participants interested in spending the weekend at Metis Crossing can set up their tents on Friday, June 23 (pre-booking required, with limited camping spots available). Friday evening’s entertainment will feature a performance by Métis Stew Band.
On Saturday, the festival is open to the public, with free general admission.
