There are 39 murals decorating the building exteriors of Stony Plain and you can get an exclusive tour of all the public art this summer.
The Stony Plain Horse & Wagon Tours are back for summer 2022 and offer a unique way to experience the town’s public art and murals.
The murals of Stony Plain are showcases of Canadian art of all different themes and stretch across the entire town with a vast majority around 50th Avenue and 50th Street. You could take a self-guided walking tour, but this summer is the time to take advantage of Horse & Wagon rides around Stony Plain.
The Wagon Tours run on Saturday afternoons this summer and depart from the Stony Plain Multicultural Heritage Centre. Throughout the tour, you’ll get to learn about life in Stony Plain through the years, the culture and people of Stony Plain, and significant historical events.
Some highlights:
The biggest: for Canada’s 150th Anniversary, a few new murals popped up around Stony Plain, including the large Mural Mosaics & The Community.
The newest: a series of paintings were added to the town in 2021 including Shaping the Future, Project of the Heart, The Good Life, and Comforts Past.
The first mural: these colourful exhibits started showing up in Stony Plain in the early 90s, with the first showing up in 1990 as Strong Arm of the Law.
Beyond the murals, you’ll also get to see all of Stony Plain, and additional public art pieces like statues and sculptures. The wagons fit 10 people, so you can book for a large family group and create a summer outing out of it or create a date out of the tours for you and a special someone.
Book your ride by calling the Stony Plain Multicultural Heritage Centre and choose from four different Saturdays this summer.
