Nestled within the enchanting landscape of the Ausable Gorge, the Rock Glen Conservation Area beckons visitors to embark on a journey through time, nature, and history. Spread across 27 hectares of stunning scenery, this day-use haven is not just another nature spot – it’s a geological treasure trove with a touch of history and a splash of natural beauty.
Located about an hour from London and 40 minutes from Sarnia, Rock Glen Conservation, maintained by Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, offers hiking trails, fossil hunting and collecting, waterfall views and opportunities to learn about the local history.
Things to Do at Rock Glen Conservation Area
- Historical Discoveries: Explore the remnants of past grist mills that once dotted the landscape, as well as the old hydro-electric dam that shaped the region’s history.

- The intuitive trail loop from the falls to the river and back is about 1 km, with a chance to extend your hike along the river for a total of 2.7 km.
- Hike rocky drain route for an adventurous descent to the Ausable River or opt for the safer, dryer route with hiking trails and sturdy stairs leading to the river.

- Get a workout: There are three sets of staircases and one with 100 steps on the trail.

- Fossil Exploration: The Ausable River Gorge and the Rock Glen section present a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore the remains of ancient marine life. Brachiopods, crinoids, trilobites, and more await your discovery. These fossils have stood the test of 400 million years, waiting to be unearthed from their rocky tombs.

- Fossil Collection: Use the guide provided upon entry for a fun fossil scavenger hunt. Collecting one fossil as a keepsake is permitted, but remember – no digging or tools allowed!

- Rock Glen Falls: Marvel at the centrepiece of the park – the majestic 10.7-meter-high Rock Glen Falls which flows into Ausable River.

- You can even go down to the bottom of the waterfall between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., but swimming is not allowed.

When to Visit:
Early May to end of October, seven days a week, from sunrise to sunset.
During daylight hours, the park is open for walking trails and visiting waterfalls year-round, weather permitting.
Remember, the trails can get muddy after rain.
