Calgary’s Epic Light Festival – Glow Downtown Winter Festival Returns this February 2019.

After a hiatus of one year, Glow Downtown Winter Festival returns for the second edition over the Family Day long weekend from February 14 to February 18, 2019 in the heart of downtown Calgary.

 

Last held in 2017, the festival organised by Calgary Downtown Association will light up the by public spaces throughout the downtown core with one-of- a-kind installations, projections, theatrical experiences and interactive light art commissioned from artists, representing local, national and international talent.

Fox Fire by BassBus: An annual large scale music and art production curated and produced by BassBus.

The Machine by Lane Shordee: Utilizing simple analog devices, The Machine will present the viewer with an animated scene using shadow play and various lighting sources.

The Luminuits by La Camaraderie: These large shadows, usually lurking in the night, come out of hiding and await you.

Ground Projection by Caitlind Brown and Wayne Garrett: A projection of cascading rainbows over the courthouse plaza.

No Control by Daniel Ireguli: An interactive LED sculpture that invites the audience to use their hands and body to act on its sound and graphics.

The face by Illuminart: A sculpture that becomes everybody’s face!

RHIZOME by Tom & Lien Dekyvere: The installation “Rhizome” shows the fusion and obstruction of geometric patterns that grow in and through one another.

CUBE by Steve Burak: This large scale 2 story installation will have hanging strings of LED lights to wander in and out of and explore.

 

ORB by Steve Burak: A large globe with LED strips are programmed to be like a clock, the second hand ticks around the outside of the frame, the inner and outer colors represent the minutes and hours of the day

Journey: This installation focuses on the image of a white horse approaching the viewer in an endless loop, overlaid with constantly shifting layers of paintings, drawings, and photographs.

In addition to over 17 light and art installations, the festival will also hold special events over the 5 day period.

  • MakeFashion — “Hacking the runway: high tech meets high fashion” — an amazing night of glow Calgary teams up with MakeFashion for a unique and exciting evening of fashion, light and technology!
  • Light Dance Party with roving performers with a Bioluminescence theme. Everything from LED Fairy wings, LED Hoopers and custom LED jellyfish!
  • Concerts by local musicians. Performers include Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, Jj Shiplett, the Static Shift (as Seen on Ctv’s the Launch) and Brad Saunders.
  • The festival with conclude with a Family Skate Party on Family Day.
