The Ontario government is set to offer a $200 rebate to eligible taxpayers in an effort to alleviate the financial pressures of rising interest rates and the federal carbon tax.
Premier Doug Ford announced the initiative, which is part of the upcoming 2024 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review.
When will you receive $200 Rebate:
The rebates are expected to begin distribution in early 2025, with an anticipated $3 billion in total support reaching approximately 12.5 million adults and 2.5 million children across the province.
This rebate initiative, backed by the government’s increased revenue from provincial sales taxes and changes in the federal capital gains tax, is designed to ease the cost of living. Ford emphasized that this financial support is crucial for families affected by the ongoing economic pressures.
“At a time when the cost of living remains stubbornly high, our government is taking action for the families and workers of this province with much-needed relief to their household budgets,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance in a news release.
“We encourage taxpayers to watch their mailboxes for this taxpayer rebate in early 2025 as we continue making life more affordable for Ontarians while retaining prudent, responsible fiscal management.”
Families with children are eligible for an additional $200 per child, providing a family of five with $1,000 if eligible.
Eligibility Criteria for $200:
- Individuals must be 18 years or older by the end of 2023.
- Residents of Ontario as of December 31, 2023.
- Must have filed the 2023 Income Tax and Benefit Return by December 31, 2024.
- Cannot be bankrupt or incarcerated in 2024.
Additional $200 For Kids:
A notable group benefiting from this initiative will be larger families.
For example, a family of five, comprising two adults and three children, will receive a total of $1,000, provided they meet all eligibility requirements.
Family Eligibility:
- Families who qualify for a Canada Child Benefit (CCB) payment for 2024 would receive an additional $200 for each eligible child under age 18.
- The taxpayer rebate payment for children would be made to those who receives the CCB in respect of the child, who must be a resident of Ontario.
- In the case of a shared custody arrangement in respect of a child, payments would be split based on the most recent CCB available.
- For families with children who did not receive the CCB for 2024, the government would provide an opportunity for a taxpayer rebate payment of $200 per child through an alternative process.
The rollout is part of a broader effort by the Ontario government to reduce expenses for its residents, including ongoing tax cuts on gasoline and other fuels, extended until June 30, 2025. These measures, alongside subsidies for transit and education, aim to provide substantial financial relief to Ontario’s taxpayers, with further details to be outlined in the upcoming fiscal review on October 30, 2024.
