The municipality of Jasper is asking visitors to stay away from the National Park.
The government of Alberta is reopening Alberta’s Provincial parks from May 1. Jasper National Park falls under Parks Canada and is closed until May 31.
The Municipality of Jasper is urging anyone planning a leisure trip to Jasper or Jasper National Park before June 1 to cancel their plans.
According to the statement, ” Visitors are encouraged to stay home and save their travels for another day. The health and safety of our residents and essential workers is our number one priority.”
“Please avoid all non-essential travel and help stop the spread. All campgrounds and visitor services in Jasper National Park are closed.
“Most businesses and hotels are closed or operating with severely restricted services.”
“Our small hospital and its dedicated staff will be extremely challenged to provide the necessary services to our residents should the pandemic spread further through our rural community.”
Greg Van Tighem, Director of Emergency Management for the municipality said, “Local law enforcement agencies are monitoring traffic in town, at local trailheads and other points of interest. Clear signage is in place to indicate that only essential services are available in Jasper. Information check stops are not in place at this time, but will be implemented if they become necessary.”
Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland said, “We are working with our community partners and local businesses to determine what economic recovery will look like. Regional visitors will play a key role in supporting our tourism economy once public health restrictions are relaxed. We are getting together as a community to ensure that can be accomplished safely in the future, but for now, for your sake and our own, everyone should just stay home.”
