You can celebrate Halloween, taste Alberta’s local brewers, sit down for a harvest dinner, or even experience an authentic train robbery.
These exciting, spooky, or picturesque train rides come from operators across the province.
Prices range for each railway’s events; some will be family-friendly or adult-only.
Alberta Prairie Railway
Alberta Prairie Railway in Stettler is fall-ready with three different types of excursions, great for all ages.
1. Murder Mystery Special Train To Big Valley
Enjoy a 6.5-hour round-trip train to Big Valley featuring live entertainment, a steak buffet, and an interactive murder mystery with professional actors. Guests join the fun, explore the village, and solve the mystery from train to community hall.

2. Roast Beef Dinner At Big Valley
This Alberta Prairie excursion features a round-trip train ride, live onboard entertainment, and a hearty roast beef meal in Big Valley. Guests can explore historic landmarks like the 1912 railway station, museums, and St. Edmund’s Church—plus, watch out for mounted train robbers along the way.

3. End Of Season Steam Special To Big Valley & Hideaway (Fireworks)
The season’s final steam-powered journey rolls to Big Valley for a steak buffet, village explorations, and live train entertainment. Stops include museums, vintage cars, and Granny’s Fudge Factory. On return, expect fireworks and possible raids from the notorious Reynolds Raiders.

4. Fall Turkey Supper Special Train To Big Valley
The final Big Valley trip of the season offers a scenic fall ride with live onboard entertainment, a roast turkey dinner at the Community Hall, and time to explore local gems like Granny’s Fudge Factory, McAlister’s Garage Museum, and the restored station—plus, beware of Reynolds Raiders.

5. All You Can Eat Special To Country Hideaway
This four-hour excursion heads to Alberta Prairie’s Country Hideaway a scenic park filled with activities for all ages. Guests enjoy a buffet lunch of burgers or hot dogs with baked beans, plus hayrides, nature walks, kids’ rides, carnival games, live entertainment, a petting zoo—and even a raid by the Reynolds Raiders.

6. Harvest Pumpkin Fest
Celebrate everything fall with your family at the Harvest Pumpkin Fest which includes 2.5 hours of train time and time at the Country Hideaway. Once your train arrives at the hideaway, you and your kids can play games, pick pumpkins, and visit with animals at the petting zoo.

Aspen Crossing – Train of Terror
During October, things start to get spooky on the train.
As an adults-only event, the Train of Terror promises some real scares. Your night of terror begins before you even get on the train, with a terrifying maze. Once on the train, the haunt can begin at any time. The excursions allow time for socializing, cocktail, and food purchases.
When: October 2 to November 1, 2025

Battle River Train Excursions
Step aboard the Battle River Express for a festive murder mystery adventure. Travel from Kelsey to Forestburg, enjoy a Christmas feast, and unravel clues with friends or colleagues. On the return trip, piece together the puzzle to solve the crime. Tickets include round-trip train ride, meal, and live entertainment.

High Level Street Car & Local Breweries
Edmonton’s High Level Street Car represents a bit of local history and is one of the coolest ways to get sweeping views of the fall-coloured river valley in the Fall.
Enjoy local tasting specials on Thursdays until October. Get your tickets for these memorable rides over the river, which include tastes and drink samples.
If you are only interested in train rides, ride the rails on weekends until Thanksgiving Weekend.

Jasper to McBride Train Tour
Do you know there is a train tour in Jasper which you can take to enjoy a Fall colour tour to B.C.? This Jasper-to-McBride adventure combines three hours aboard Via’s Skeena Train with a guided return bus tour. Highlights include Dunster, Rearguard Falls, and towering Mount Robson. Along the way, travellers enjoy stunning scenery, photo opportunities, and engaging stories about the region’s history, geology, and wildlife before returning to Jasper. The train tour is available year-round, and a train ride during the fall season will allow you to see the vibrant colours of the season.
