Low Income Canadians Will Qualify For Free Dental Care Under Liberal-NDP deal

Liberal Party of Canada and the New Democratic Party have reached an agreement, Delivering for Canadians Now: A Supply and Confidence Agreement, through which NDP will support Justin Trudeau’s minority government until when Parliament rises in June of 2025, allowing four budgets to be presented by the government during this time.

This means that NDP would not move a vote of non-confidence, nor vote for a no-confidence motion until June of 2025.

Under the agreement, the two parties have identified key areas to work together which include fighting the climate crisis, affordable housing and childcare, expanding healthcare, ensuring 10 days of paid sick leave for all federally regulated workers, making a significant additional investment in Indigenous housing, and expanded “Election Day” with three days of voting.

As part of the deal, a new dental care program will launch for low-income Canadians which will be fully implemented by 2025. The program would be restricted to families with an income of less than $90,000 annually, with no co-pays for anyone under $70,000 annually in income. According to the news release, the program will begin for under 12-year-olds this year and for under 18-year-olds, seniors and persons living with a disability in 2023.

The government is also planning to pass Canada Pharmacare Act by the end of 2023 which will enable a universal national pharmacare program.
