Lucy Lobster made her Groundhog Day prediction at a relocated, safer site due to heavy snow, icy conditions, and an incoming nor’easter.
Appearing outside Capt. Kat’s at 8 a.m. instead of Cape Sable Island Causeway, Lucy did not see her shadow, signalling an early spring and officially launching the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl, with in-person and livestream viewing options available.
February in Nova Scotia brings not just the chill of winter but also the warmth of a unique celebration – the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl. As the month ushers in the peak lobster season along the South Shore, from Barrington, dubbed the Lobster Capital of Canada, to the scenic Peggy’s Cove, the entire region immerses itself in a crustacean celebration.
Among the many highlights of this festive season is Lucy the Lobster, South Shore‘s answer to the traditional Groundhog Day predictor.
Lucy, taking center stage since 2018, emerges from the chilly Atlantic waters on Groundhog Day, and her behaviour is observed to predict whether spring will arrive early or winter will persist.
This festival isn’t just about Lucy’s prediction; it’s a month of lobster-themed joy. The Lobster Crawl is packed with various events, including the Lobster Crawl Makers Market, Lobster Masquerade Ball and the delightful Tail End Reception at the month’s close. The festival also features a lobster treasure hunt, promising fun for all ages.
Nova Scotia also has two weather groundhog forecasters – Shubenacadie Sam from Shubenacadie Wildlife Park and TR Tunnel from Two Rivers Wildlife Park.
The Groundhog Day event at Shubenacadie Wildlife Park was cancelled due to forecasted blowing snow and unsafe travel conditions. Shubenacadie Sam remained in her burrow and did not see her shadow and folklore says that points to an early spring.
Groundhog Day at Two Rivers Wildlife Park was also cancelled due to unsafe winter driving conditions. Since the event won’t proceed, Tunnel won’t see his shadow, which means early spring.
