Did you know that in a rural community near Calgary, there exists a unique museum focusing on creepy objects that evoke apprehension and wonder in visitors?
Aptly named, the Museum of Fear and Wonder, the museum located near Bergen showcases a unique repository of the peculiar and profound.
Founded by Brendan Griebel and Jude Griebel, this museum is a testament to the emotional and narrative power of objects. Through its collection of artifacts, each with its own emotionally charged story, the museum invites visitors to explore themes of human experience, identity, and myth-making within the walls of a repurposed army barracks.
The museum’s exhibits, such as Residue: Selections from the Flat Files and You are what you eat: The Marriage of Food and Anatomical Technologies, challenge visitors to reconsider their relationship with everyday objects and the stories they hold.
From the weighty presence of its core collection to the ephemeral nature of its archived images, the museum provides a platform for deep reflection and conversation.
Open each summer from June 1st to August 30th, the Museum of Fear and Wonder offers individually guided tours without charge, fostering public dialogue on our connections to the material world. However, visits must be scheduled in advance, as the museum, doubling as a private residence, cannot accommodate walk-ins.
If you are interested in visiting the museum, appointment bookings are now open.
According to the website, the booking opportunities will be limited this year as due to construction plans for a new building expected to open in 2025.
The appointments usually sell out much earlier than the museum’s summer opening. Hence if you are interested in visiting one of Alberta’s most unique museums, book an appointment online ASAP!
