Poll: Most Canadian Football Fans Prefer to Watch Super Bowl Than Grey Cup

With one of the biggest sporting spectacles in North America taking place this weekend, Angus Reid Institute has released a study which finds that most Canadian football fans, if they had to choose between Super Bowl and Grey Cup, would opt for the American game.

Three in five (62%) Canadians would watch the Super Bowl, while two-in-five (38%) prefer the Grey Cup.

While a majority in Prairies (no surprise for anyone who follows the game) supports the Canadian game over the American one, football fans in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada prefer National Football League over Canadian Football League.

According to the study, British Columbians who follow both leagues equally lean towards Super Bowl if they had to choose one.

The study also finds that while older men (55+) follow both leagues at an equal level, one-quarter of men aged 18 to 34 follow the NFL closely (26%) compared to just one-in-nine (11%) for the CFL. For men in the 35 to 54 age range, 34% prefer NFL over 19% of those who prefer CFL.

Angus Reid finds women irrespective of their age are close to equally likely to follow both.

It is going to be a challenge for CFL to retain interest as younger Canadians obviously prefer the American game over the Canadian one.
