Sure, you can climb to lookouts and take-in awesome views of the badlands! But, to really experience the land and the river that carved the Central Alberta landscape, you should take a trip on the Red Deer River.
From a kayak or canoe, you can get a real sense of the variety of landscapes around the Red Deer River, Drumheller, and the valley.
You, of course, can do it all on your own (and there are guides available online), but if you want a guided trip, then Red Deer River Adventures offers a few different ways to explore the beautiful Central Alberta River valley including guided excursions, both on water and on land.
Whether it is your first time on the water in a boat, or just your first time paddling a canoe or kayak, Red Deer River Adventures can guide you along via their three different tours:
- Rosedale – 2-3 hours, depending on the water levels: A simple 13km tour through the badlands and river valley behind the city of Drumheller.
- Horsethief Canyon – 4-6 hours, depending on the water levels: This 21km trip departs from the Bleriot Ferry and ends at the Adventure site.
- Suspension Bridges – 5-9 hours, depending on the water levels: A 26 km paddle through the lower Drumheller valley and to East Coulee.
They also offer multiday trips across the entire Red Deer River corridor.
Badland Hike:
If you want to go on a guided hike on the badlands, then call ahead and let them know you’re interested in seeing the badlands with an expert as the guided hike adventures are by inquiry only. They’ll show you highlights like natural attractions, wildlife, and more. This part of Alberta is home to unique sights, rare species of plants and wildlife, and sweeping vistas. Your guide can help you learn about geological and cultural history, and can help you get to all the best views.
Rent a Canoe or Kayak for the Red Deer River:
If you are an experienced paddler without a kayak or canoe, then you are able to rent your boat from Red Deer River Adventures and embark on your own float. The rental office is conveniently located right next to a launch area, but they also offer a shuttle service for select pickup points further down the river.
Rent an E-bike for the Surrounding Trails:
Drumheller is a wickedly fun place to explore on bike, and you can make your ride a little smoother with the Adventure Company’s e-bike rentals. Set off on trails around town or the valley and add on a trailer for smaller kids. The e-bikes can reach up to 30km/hour, so kids need to be 12 years or older to ride their own e-bike. There are several trailheads located in the valley which follows Highway AB-10.
