Skoden Indigenous Film Festival celebrating Indigenous creators is back tomorrow featuring an eclectic selection of movies from filmmakers from coast to coast to coast.
Angakusajaujuq – The Shaman’s Apprentice/Skoden Indigenous Film Festival
Skoden is a unifying Indigenous slang term that transcends a single language and stands for “let’s go then!”
Founded by Carr Sappier (Wolastoqew) and Grace Mathisen, Simon Fraser University (SFU) Film alumni from the School for the Contemporary Arts, the festival will be a three-day event with 6 short film programs and an awards ceremony.
The films selected in the festival, which is based on the principle of truth and reconciliation, were chosen by SIFF students of SFU who watched over eighty fantastic film submissions that explored Indigenous cultures, experiences, and representations.
The movie festival features films by Desmond Simon (The Mask Maker, My Brother) and Alex Maksagak (Avi: From The North), Zacharias Kunuk (Angakusajaujuq – The Shaman’s Apprentice), Amanda Strong (Spirit Bear And Children Make History), and Alanis Obomsawin (Honour to Senator Murray Sinclair).
Each of SIFF 2022’s 5 main programs screening at the SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts – including: “Stoodis! (Let’s Do This!),” “Evolution Revolution,” “Carrying the Fire,” “Where We’ve Come From & Where We’re Going,” and “Skoden! (Let’s Go Then!)”. In addition to these 5 programs, SIFF 2022 includes the Skoden Sampler program screening at the SFU Surrey Campus, a selection of short films that represent the marvelous array of Indigenous talents that the 5 main programs will be showcasing.
The festival’s ticketing is on a sliding scale – $0, $5, $10, $15, $20, $25, or $50 – and the suggested donation is $10-$15 per program you attend.
“Let’s go then! With humour, dialogue, and respect” to watch the film festival in Vancouver.
