Sinting Festival: Celebrate Jamaican Culture, Music and Food This Weekend in Toronto

Celebrate Jamaican culture, music and food at the Sinting Festival on Eglinton West.

Sinting Festival

This is a 3 day long festival from 26th August to 28th, in order to promote Toronto’s Little Jamaica Neighborhood.

Little Jamaica stretches along Eglinton Avenue W, Keele Street in the West to Marlee Avenue in the East. There is a city laneway named Reggae Lane that is covered with stunning murals where you can take incredible pictures.

 

Sinting Festival is hosted by the Black Business and Professional Association to help promote the neighbourhood, help businesses and bring diversity and inclusion to the city. There will be Jamaican music, dancing, fashion, Caribbean food and so much more to do at this festival. You will also find vendors selling Jamaican-inspired crafts.

Actor and producer, Femi Lawson, will be the host of the event. There will be numerous musical performances over these 3 days. There is an open mic on the 28th and a workshop with Heritage Singers.

On the 27th, you can bring your dominos for a game at the Green P Reggae Lane parking lot. You can also watch Akwantu by Roy Anderson on their movie night.

Dance your heart out to catchy Jamaican beats on Saturday at the 60 Jam, which celebrates 60 years of Jamaican dance. It will start from the Dufferin stage and move to the main stage. You will dance with instructors who will teach you all the right moves. They also have a Latin Caribbean Fusion dance on the Dufferin stage.

Tonya P, Juno nominee and the recipient of several other awards including a Canadian Reggae Music Award, and Mally Bless will headline the stage on Saturday at 3:30pm.

On the 28th, you can show off your cool moves at the Dufferin stage. You can dance to hip hop, afrobeat, reggae and so many other styles.

Enjoy a beatboxing performance by Scott Jackson, the 2012 Canadian Beatbox Champion during BeatBox Battle – Beat out the Riddim on Sunday at 1 pm. He was also a finalist on Canada’s Got Talent. Beatbox Canada will be performing too. It was established in 2009, for the Canadian Beatboxing community by Scott Jackson and Philip Dixon.

The Sinting fashion parade features the work of several designers from the avenue, such as Beni Boo Styles, Philian Fashions, Gustave Shop, and Wailer’s connections. Lincoln Downer, the consul general of Jamaica will be the special model guest during the parade.

Try different food and explore new flavours at Jacko’s restaurant, Ethan Chill spot, Carib 2, Kojo, and Reggae Cafe. Meet famous chefs and taste what they have to offer during cooking demonstrations. You can also watch an Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony by Roman’s N Care.

What: This free community event will celebrate Caribbean culture both locally and from around the Diaspora with food, fashion, music, and dance. Performers at the event will include Da’ville, Kairo McLean, Michie Mee, Jay Douglas, Rayzalution, and many more. The event will also host a beat-box battle (Beat Out the Riddim), Dancing in de Street (hosted by choreographer and dance teacher Martin Samuels), and the Sinting Fest Fashion Parade (featuring designs from Beni Boo Styles, Philian Fashions, and Gustave Shop).

Eglinton Avenue West, between Marlee Avenue and Dufferin Street, will be closed to vehicle traffic from noon on Friday, August 26 until 2 a.m. on Sunday, August 28, for Sinting Fest on Eglinton West.
