Exploring Bonavista’s History
Spend a spring or summer day exploring the Provincial and National Historic Sites around Bonavista. These are chances to learn about the area’s natural and geological history, cultural history, and more.
- Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site features a preserved lighthouse that is older than Canada itself. The area also offers great views over the water, perfect for spotting puffins or enjoying general birdwatching.
- The Mockbeggar Plantation Provincial Historic Site, originally a fishery plantation, is open each summer for guided or self-guided tours, and is another great coastal spot for birdwatching, whale watching, or seeing the icebergs.
- The Ryan Premises National Historic Site is a museum located in a preserved fishery. The location features five main buildings to explore, along with picnic areas.
- The historic Garrick Theatre is still in operation today in Bonavista. They host a few shows or performances a month featuring local or regional artists and their annual Summer Series.
Icebergs, Whales, & How to See It All in Bonavista
The above-mentioned historic sites, like the Lighthouse or Mockbeggar, are both excellent spots for setting up a picnic, blanket, or chairs, and letting the whale or iceberg views come to you. Plus, there are many guided tours in Bonavista that help get you a little closer to the natural action.
- With Seas the Day, you’ll have the option of boat tours, private charters, or cod fishing tours. Their aim is to get you great views of the humpback whales, or one of 500 possible icebergs that pass by this coast each year.
- The Bonavista Adventure Tours company have guided trips on and off the water. Join them for guided hikes, beach experiences, and boat tours.
- The goal of Discovery Sea Adventures is to get you the great views of the humpback whales. Their guided whale tours will, of course, also include the possibility of seeing seabirds and icebergs.
The Best Walks & Trails near Bonavista
These trails in and around town range from quick and simple, to day-hikes outside of town. Plus, the Discovery Geopark sites each have their own trails to explore.
- The Old Day’s Pond Boardwalk trail takes you around the pond and to a great view of the town. This trail can also connect you to the lands around the Mockbeggar Plantation.
- The Cape Shore Trail, located on the north side of town, is approximately 3.5 km in length as it follows high cliffs and arches over the water.
- Check out one of Cape Bonavista’s most popular and exciting hiking trails in Port Union. The Murphy’s Cove/Lodge’s Pond trails create a 7.7km loop through the abandoned Murphy’s Cove, to lookout areas over the water, and views of one of Newfoundland’s few remaining manned lighthouses.
The Unique Coastline near Bonavista
Within a short drive in any direction from Bonavista are incredible coastal sights to see. These rock and cliff formations are all part of the Discovery Geopark and within an hour’s drive from Bonavista.
- The Chimney is one of the notable formations created by the forces of the sea. Watch marine life and sea birds along the way and learn through interpretive signage.
- Dungeon Provincial Park, north of town, offers views over the water from natural rock arches and sea caves.
- Tickle Cove and Keels, west of Bonavista, are home to Newfoundland’s famous Sea Arch and the Devil’s Footprints.
- South of Bonavista in Port Union is an incredible display of seaside fossils.
- The Atlantic puffin, Newfoundland’s official provincial bird, hangs out around these unique rock and cliff formations. This coastal part of Newfoundland is one of the best places to see the adorable birds.

Celebrate with the locals of Bonavista and get to know the arts and culture through the annual festivals. And in one case, through a festival that only happens every two years.
- Bonavista Biennale is a town arts and culture festival held every two years. The event includes art exhibits, installations, and celebrations, in different indoor and outdoor venues.
- Every summer, Bonavista hosts their Church Street Festival to celebrate local food, arts, and entertainment.
