Toronto drivers will need to plan ahead as the City rolls out two full weekend expressway closures for maintenance work this spring.
Gardiner Expressway will shut down completely between the Humber River and Spadina Avenue from 11 p.m. on Friday, April 24, until 5 a.m. on Monday, April 27.
The Don Valley Parkway will close from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp, starting 11 p.m. on Friday, May 8, and reopening at 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11. Both timelines depend on weather conditions.
City officials say the approach is about efficiency. By concentrating work into a single weekend closure for each route, crews can complete the equivalent of more than 30 overnight lane closures. That translates into about 150 hours of avoided disruption and up to 25 per cent in cost savings.
Work will run around the clock. Crews will tackle potholes and cracks, replace guardrails, inspect bridges, repaint lane markings, fix lighting, clear catch basins, and remove debris and graffiti.
On the Gardiner, the closure allows final paving of eastbound lanes between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue, along with work on the Jameson Avenue off-ramp. That section had already seen major rehabilitation finished 18 months ahead of schedule, though paving was delayed during the Toronto Blue Jays’ playoff run.
The DVP closure will include full resurfacing and progress on the Eastern Avenue bridge and Bayview Bloor ramp projects, with additional work by Metrolinx and Toronto Hydro.
Traffic agents, signal adjustments, and coordination with navigation apps will be in place. Still, the City is urging drivers to leave extra time or consider transit where possible.
