A new ice cream inspired by cottage country summers and one of Canada’s most recognizable songs is arriving just in time for the season.
CNW Group/Kawartha Dairy Limited
Kawartha Dairy has partnered with The Tragically Hip to launch The Tragically Chip, a limited-edition maple whisky flavoured ice cream with dark chocolatey chunks and a black cherry ripple. The ice cream is crafted in Bobcaygeon, the same lakeside town immortalized in the band’s 1999 song “Bobcaygeon.”
The track, one of the band’s best-known songs, painted a picture of escaping city stress for quiet nights and clear skies in small-town Ontario.
Set between Sturgeon and Pigeon lakes along the Trent-Severn Waterway, Bobcaygeon has become one of the Kawarthas’ best-known destinations. People come for boating, beaches, patios and, increasingly, a stop at Kawartha Dairy itself.
The new flavour also circles back to Kawartha Dairy’s own roots. The company has operated in Bobcaygeon since 1937, when Jack and Ila Crowe bought a small local dairy. At the time, the operation ran out of a modest three-room building cooled with ice cut from the lake. More than 85 years later, the company remains family-owned and headquartered in the same town.
Mike Crowe, third-generation owner and director of product development at Kawartha Dairy, said the partnership reflects shared summer traditions tied to music, campfires and time at the lake.
The collaboration also includes a charitable component. A portion of sales from The Tragically Chip will support Breakfast Club of Canada and its school breakfast programs across the country. Members of The Tragically Hip said the partnership was another way to give back to communities that have supported the band over the years.
The Tragically Chip will be available at Kawartha Dairy stores and on select grocery shelves for a limited time this summer, starting on June 22.
