Listeria contamination may not alter the appearance or smell of food, but it can still cause illness. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Those at higher risk include pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Infected pregnant women might experience mild, flu-like symptoms, but the infection could result in severe outcomes such as premature delivery, newborn infection, or stillbirth. Severe cases can be fatal.

The recall was prompted by an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak, and there have been reports of illnesses linked to these beverages.

Per the news release, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is overseeing a food safety investigation, which may lead to further product recalls. The CFIA is also ensuring that the recalled products are being removed from the market.

Consumers who suspect they have fallen ill after consuming the recalled products should contact their healthcare provider.
