The National Historic Site was built between 1832 and 1837. It was a key site in a network of fortifications for the defence of the Rideau Canal and the Kingston harbour until 1891.

Visitors to Fort Henry can learn about 19th-century military life through self-guided tours, scenic views, heart-pounding musical performances and precision military demonstrations by the Fort Henry Guard, student recruits trained as British soldiers from 1867.

This month, those who are looking for a more in-depth experience can enjoy Fort Henry Tattoo and Sunset Ceremonies.

Experience the sights and sounds of military musicians with a precise depiction of the tattoo tradition inside the iconic limestone walls of Fort Henry National Historic Site during the Fort Henry Tattoo on August 20th.

Brass, drums, pipes and fife will fill the Parade Square, complete with a massed band ensemble and firework grand finale. Bands performing at the event include Fort Henry Guard, Windsor Regiment Band from Windsor, 8 Wings Pipes and Drums from Trenton, 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Pipes & Drums from Petawawa, Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Band from Hamilton, Rob Roy Pipe Band & Highland Dancers and Princess of Wales Own Regiment Foundation Pipes & Drums from Kingston.

Sunset Ceremonies, an impressive show of military precision will also return to Fort Henry on Wednesdays, August 24 and 31. This event features disciplined marching manoeuvres, rifle drill, military music, cannon firing, and a fireworks finale.

If you are looking for more fun activities, Pumpkinferno, a mind-blowing hand-carved lighted pumpkin installation, will also return to Fort Henry this year during the Halloween Season.
