At Millennium Park, Calgary has unveiled a pioneering outdoor urban bouldering attraction, the first of its kind in Western Canada.
The project, a collaboration with Montreal’s OnSite, features three natural rock boulders, standing between 3.6m to 4.25m tall and weighing 11 to 27 metric tonnes.
The boulders, inaugurated earlier this summer, cater to climbers of all proficiency levels, boasting up to 60 established problems or climbing routes. Canadian climbers Sonnie Trotter and Calgary’s own Josh Muller, both recognized for their climbing prowess and owning climbing gyms, contributed to setting these routes.
With climbing’s burgeoning popularity, even culminating in Olympic recognition, this free-to-use feature is a timely addition to Calgary’s recreational landscape. “The boulders’ placement in Millennium Park provides climbers an unparalleled opportunity to hone their skills in a scenic, urban environment,” noted Project Manager Britney Woods.
OnSite’s Francis Larose emphasized their intention to simulate a traditional outdoor climbing experience. He said, “Rather than random holds, we’ve established specific problems for a genuine climbing challenge.”
Climbers are reminded to bring essential gear, including crash pads and helmets, and to heed the safety advisories available online and at the site. Alongside this new addition, Millennium Park also hosts North America’s largest skatepark, sports courts, and an events stage.
