Walkers and cyclists now have a new way to cross the Detroit River. The toll-free multi-use path on the Gordie Howe International Bridge opened at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, following the bridge’s vehicle opening on July 27.

The bridge is the first new link between Ontario and Michigan in more than 60 years. Its 220-metre towers, six traffic lanes, 16 toll lanes and 60 inspection lanes show the scale of the project.
For people travelling under their own power, though, the path is the headline and here are the details to know before you head out:
Walking and cycling on the path:
The path runs 2.5 kilometres and carries two-way pedestrian and cycling traffic in a single 3.6-metre-wide lane. From one border inspection booth to the other, the full one-way journey is three kilometres.
The 3.6-metre-wide lane carries two-way traffic and has a five per cent incline. At the bridge’s highest point, users will be 46 metres above the Detroit River.
The speed limit is 20 km/h, and pedestrians have the right-of-way.
Allow about 20 minutes by bike or 45 minutes on foot, plus border crossing time.
Pedal-assist bikes are temporarily barred during the first few weeks. Pets, e-scooters, throttle-equipped bikes, skateboards and roller-skates are not permitted. Identified service animals are allowed. Groups of 20 or more must notify the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority.
More Hiking:
The crossing does not simply end at the border. On both sides, it feeds into established walking and cycling networks, making a longer day trip possible.
In Canada, connections include Malden Park Trailhead, the Windsor Riverfront Trail, LaSalle Parkway Trail, Trans Canada Trail, Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway.
On the U.S. side, users can continue toward Clark Park Trailhead, Joe Louis Greenway, Detroit Riverwalk, Iron Belle Trail and Great Lakes Way.
