Toronto Zoo is preparing to open its gates after dark for a new illuminated lantern event featuring more than 2,000 handcrafted displays this September.

Beginning September 2, the nighttime experience will combine wildlife-themed installations, cultural performances, interactive photo moments, food and drink, and a conservation-focused artwork about the endangered Blanding’s Turtle.
Presented at the zoo’s Meadowvale Road grounds, the event is designed as both an evening outing and a closer look at animal stories from around the world, told through colour, light and live entertainment.
What to Expect at Glow in the Wild

- A glowing journey around the world: Visitors can follow lantern routes inspired by animals and ecosystems from around the globe. More than 2,000 illuminated pieces will reshape the zoo after sunset, creating a walk-through experience filled with colours, animal forms and interactive photo stops. The displays are designed to turn the grounds into a nighttime adventure.
- The Blanding’s Turtle in a new light: The Blanding’s Turtle takes centre stage in a first-of-its-kind installation created with an Indigenous artist. Built entirely from handcrafted lanterns, the immersive display uses storytelling, art and light to introduce the endangered species, explain why protection matters and directly connect the experience to the zoo’s “Guardians of Wild” Strategic Plan.
- Culture, performances and evening treats: Live cultural performances will be presented with the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, adding music and movement to the evening route. Guests can also pause for food and beverage offerings along the way, making the event feel less like a standard zoo visit and more like a nighttime festival.
