Newsweek says the ranking is based on four criteria:

  • Hospital recommendations from Medical Experts: an international online survey sent to more than 80,000 healthcare professionals
  • Patient Experience: survey of patient satisfaction with hospitalization
  • Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROM): surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals
  • Hospital Quality Metrics: patient safety, hygiene measures, waiting times and quality of treatment

According to Newsweek, the scores were calculated for each hospital in each of the above four categories and weighted to arrive at the best hospitals in each country: Hospitals were scored on peer recommendations (45%), patient experience (16.25%), quality metrics (35.25%), and PROMs implementation (3.5%).
