In collaboration with Statista, Newsweek has released its latest rankings of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals for 2024, expanding its coverage to include 12 medical specialties with the addition of obstetrics and gynecology.
This comprehensive list highlights top-performing hospitals across various fields, including cardiology, oncology, pediatrics, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, urology, and obstetrics & gynecology.
Per the news release, the ranking encompasses the top 300 hospitals for cardiology and oncology, the top 250 for pediatrics, the top 150 for cardiac surgery, endocrinology, and gastroenterology, and the top 125 for neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology, along with the top 100 for obstetrics & gynecology.
Canadian hospitals feature in the top 50 in various medical specialties.
Canada’s Pediatric hospitals top the rankings with Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children at 2nd, Vancouver’s BC Children’s Hospital at 7th, and Calgary’s Alberta Children’s Hospital at 8th.
The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto excels in oncology, securing the 13th position. In cardiology, MUHC Montreal General Hospital in Montreal ranks 36th, closely followed by Toronto General – University Health Network at 38th. The same Toronto General – University Health Network also holds the 18th spot in cardiac surgery.
Endocrinology sees Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto at 19th, with Toronto General – University Health Network at 34th, and Vancouver General Hospital at 48th. Gastroenterology and pulmonology accolades go to Toronto General – University Health Network, ranking 15th and 36th, respectively. Orthopedic care is highlighted with Mount Sinai Hospital at 25th and Vancouver General Hospital at 34th.
Neurology and neurosurgery recognitions are given to Mount Sinai Hospital and MUHC Montreal General Hospital in Montreal, ranking 21st and 25th in neurology, and 25th and 43rd in neurosurgery, respectively. Urology rankings include Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre at 20th and Toronto General – University Health Network at 39th. For obstetrics & gynecology, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre leads in Toronto at 6th, followed by Mount Sinai Hospital at 24th and North York General Hospital at 42nd.
Per the news release, to compile the rankings, a global survey was conducted from June to July 2023, inviting tens of thousands of medical professionals—including doctors, healthcare professionals, and hospital managers—to recommend hospitals within their primary field of expertise. Additionally, they could select a secondary field where they have significant knowledge or experience. This survey was complemented by accreditation data and a voluntary PROMs (Patient Reported Outcome Measures) Implementation Survey to provide a comprehensive evaluation of each hospital’s performance.
The scoring model for the rankings was based on recommendations from peers, accounting for 92.5% of each hospital’s score, with accreditations/certifications contributing 5% and the PROMs Implementation Survey adding 2.5%. Primary recommendations from experts carried a 70% weight in the preliminary reputation score, while secondary recommendations were weighted at 30%.
