Beginning April 1, 2023, residents of northern Ontario served by the 807 area code, residents of Newfoundland and Labrador served by 709 area code and residents served by served by the 867 area code in three exchanges of Yellowknife (including Dettah, Behchokǫ̀, and Whatì), will be required to dial ten digits (area code + seven-digit phone number) for all local calls.

Telecommunications Alliance, a group of major Canadian communications companies, says if a local call is dialled with only seven digits, it will be interrupted by a network announcement before being connected.

To avoid inconvenience, residents and businesses must add their area code to call programmed numbers in their communication devices, including wireline and wireless phones, auto-dialers, computers, alarm systems, and lifeline equipment.

They should also update their stationery, cheques, advertising, employee, client, supplier, and other databases to include 10-digit phone numbers.

While local calls dialled with only seven digits will still go through until May 31, a network message will remind callers that they must dial ten digits for local calls starting April 1.

After May 31, seven-digit local calls will no longer be completed.
