17 New Coronavirus Cases Reported on March 10th in Canada, Total Now 96

17 new coronavirus cases were announced today by various provincial health officials.

British Columbia

Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, and Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, reported seven new cases of COVID-19, for a total of 39 cases in British Columbia. The new cases include two health-care workers at Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver.

 

Among the other 5 cases, 2 cases appear to be community cases in Fraser Health Region, with 2 men in their 90s and 40s. Public health teams are actively investigating both cases. Rest three cases are travel-related – a woman in her late 60s who recently returned from a tour in Egypt, a man in his 90s who was on the Grand Princess cruise ship and another man in his 40s who recently travelled to Germany.

Alberta

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health announced 7 more COVID-19 cases in Alberta , taking the total cases to 14.

Three of the new cases are from the Edmonton zone. They involve a male in his seventies and a female in her sixties who had travelled together, and a female in her thirties who had also recently travelled outside of Canada.

The other four new cases are from the Calgary zone. They involve a male in his fifties, two females in their thirties and a female in her forties.

The travellers had returned from visiting a range of countries, including France, the Netherlands, Egypt, Iran, Taiwan, Germany, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, the Philippines and the United States. Several of the cases visited more than one country on their trip. One individual was also on the same MS Braemar cruise ship in the Caribbean as a case announced March 9.

Ontario

Ontario only reported one new COVID-19 case in a man in his 40s who travelled to Switzerland. He was assessed at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Now there are 36 confirmed coronavirus cases in the province.

Quebec

Quebec has a total of 7 cases with 2 new cases reported today. It was also announced that an infected person used Metro line while potentially contagious.

Cancellations & Changes to Events due to COVID-19 in Canada:

  • Air Canada announced that it is suspending its flights between Canada and Italy from Wednesday, May 11 until May 1.
  • Pearl Jam announced that they are postponing their 16-date tour spring tour, which was scheduled to kick-off on March 18 in Toronto.
  • True North Festival cancelled the 2020 iteration of the famous tech festival in Waterloo.
  • International travel and medical insurance issues for 5 international artists in the wake of the COVID-19 virus forced the cancellation of Edmonton Flamenco festival in its entirety.

Current Scenario in Canada

Currently in Canada, the total positive COVID-19 cases stand at 96, with 39 cases in British Columbia, 14 in Alberta, 36 in Ontario and 7 in Quebec. Of these 96, 9 cases, 4 in B.C. and 5 in Ontario were fully resolved, with each of those patients having two consecutive negative tests at least 24 hours apart.

British Columbia recorded Canada’s first fatality from COVID-19.
