Canada as the 51st U.S. State? Here’s What Canadians Think

In response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting Canada could become the “51st state,” Leger conducted an online survey to gauge Canadian opinions on the matter.

The Leger survey, conducted from December 6 to 9, 2024, included 1,520 respondents aged 18 and older.

The survey reveals that 82% of Canadians oppose the idea of Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state, with 13% in support and 5% undecided.

Earlier today, Trump referred to the Canadian Prime Minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada” on Truth Social.

He said, ” I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!”

According to the poll, opposition is strongest in Atlantic Canada (90%) and among women (87%), while men (19%) and Albertans (19%) are most supportive.

Age also influences views, with 16% of those aged 18-34 expressing support compared to just 8% of those aged 55 and older.

Regional differences are notable, with Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia showing opposition rates of 83%, 84%, and 79%, respectively.

Urban, suburban, and rural respondents share similar opposition levels at 81%, 83%, and 83%.

Support varies by political affiliation, with 21% of Conservative Party (CPC) supporters, 25% of People’s Party of Canada (PPC) supporters, 13% of Green Party voters and 12% of Bloc Québécois supporters favouring the proposal.

In contrast, opposition is strongest among New Democratic Party (NDP) voters (94%), followed by Liberal Party (89%).

The poll was conducted through LEO’s online panel using a non-probability sample. While a margin of error cannot be calculated for such a sample, a probability sample of this size would yield a margin of error of ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20.

This is not the first time Trump has hinted at Canada’s economic reliance on the U.S., reportedly suggesting that if tariffs or immigration policies were unsustainable for Canada, statehood might be an option.

As an American, this question is ridiculous. It is action from a hate based tyrant who will ALWAYS put his OWN empowerments and wealth before what is best for the people of the world – while always attempting to frame it otherwise.

I, as an American will stand up for the freedom and respect of All Canadians, always – Love Thy Neighbor.

Those Hate Based Can’t Love Anyone Or Anything. They are Prisoners of Hate. Donald Trump is without a doubt a prisoner of hate.

As a Canadian, this question is insulting. Just because some over-the-hill egoist suggests an insult that supports his mega mania, does not mean the idea should receive airtime. Why would rational moral people wish to become part of a nationalistic, xenophobic, gun-tot in’, people.
