Alberta has confirmed a case of the new COVID-19 variant of concern, Omicron, in a person who travelled from Nigeria and the Netherlands.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw says the person is asymptomatic and is still in quarantine since their arrival from international travel.
Canada confirmed its first two cases over the weekend in Ontario and currently has reported four cases of the variant. Quebec has also confirmed its first case today.
Canada is bringing back mandatory isolation for travellers returning from international travel except those from the United States to combat the spread of Omicron.
WHO says this variant has a concerning number of mutations and that preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection, as compared to other variants of concern.
On Tuesday, Alberta reported 238 new cases of COVID-19. There are 434 people being treated in hospitals with 81 in the ICU.
Alberta also reported six new deaths today.
83.8% of Albertans aged 12 and above are fully vaccinated.
