Alberta parents and guardians can now pre-register their children aged five to eleven for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
Health Canada today approved the Pfizer vaccine to be administered in kids three weeks apart in a two-dose regimen of 10 micrograms. This is a lower dose than the 30 micrograms two-dose regimen authorized for people 12 years of age and older.
Alberta says the province is expecting the pediatric vaccine to arrive in the province during the week of November 22nd.
Alberta Health will provide more information regarding bookings and appointments once vaccines are available.
More than 390,000 Albertans aged five to 11 will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.
Chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said, “While children are at a significantly lower risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19, they can still get infected with the virus and transmit it to others. This is especially important as we head into the winter season and are largely gathering indoors. As parents consider this choice for their children, please consult reliable information sources and consider the benefits not just for our children but for those around them as well.”
As per the news release, among children aged five to 11, there have been about 30,700 cases of COVID-19 diagnosed since March of 2020, with 78 of those cases ending up in hospital and 20 in intensive care. The province says most cases in children are milder than adults but some kids can get very sick, have long-lasting symptoms or complications such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
How to register
Register kids aged five to eleven in Alberta Vaccine Booking. Those registered will receive a notification to book an appointment.
NACI Recommendation
National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommends children receive their COVID-19 vaccine two weeks before or after any other vaccines they may receive to better monitor for any side effects due to either vaccines. NACI says the suggested minimum waiting period between vaccines is precautionary at this time.
