Alberta to Double the Number of Seats For Veterinary Medicine Program

The Alberta government is investing $8.4 million over three years to support the expansion of the faculty of veterinary medicine at the University of Calgary.

According to the news release, the existing number of seats in the program will be increased by up to 50 to address the shortage of large animal veterinarians in the province.

In addition, the provincial government will also invest $59 million in capital funding as part of the Alberta at Work initiative over three years for new infrastructure at the University.

The investment follows Alberta’s government’s 2017 decision not to renew its funding agreement with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan, which provided veterinary medicine education to Alberta students.

The funding was transferred to the University of Calgary’s Veterinary Medicine Program beginning 2020.
