Alberta will stop collecting fuel tax for six months starting New Year’s Day.
Starting Jan. 1, Albertans will save 13 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel from January to June.
This is the second time in a year that the provincial government has stopped collecting fuel taxes.
This is part of the measures taken by Danielle Smith’s government to reduce the effects of inflation in the province.
President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance Travis Toews said in a statement, “These are meaningful savings that will have a real impact on Albertans’ finances. For example, if you drive a pickup truck and fill up once a week, you’ll save about $440 on average in the next six months. If you drive a car or an SUV, you’ll save anywhere from $160 to just over $300.”
The provincial fuel tax relief program will permanently return to the current system of providing fuel tax relief based on the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil starting July 1, 2023.
