The province is replacing its long-standing welcome signs with a new set that reflects its “Strong and Free” motto. According to Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen, the updated signs are meant to better represent Alberta’s identity while greeting both visitors and returning residents.
Per the news release, the existing signs have been in place for more than 40 years. After decades of exposure to weather, officials say they have reached the end of their lifespan. The replacement signs are being designed with durability in mind, built to withstand Alberta’s climate for years to come.
In total, 22 signs are planned for installation at key entry points along major highways. These include crossings from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Montana and the Northwest Territories.

The government has already issued a request for proposals to find a company to build the new structures. Installation is expected to begin by fall 2026.
The project comes with an estimated cost of about $3.5 million. Along with updated branding, the new signs will prominently feature the province’s slogan, which officials say reflects Alberta’s sense of identity and opportunity.
