Alberta is updating its licence plate for the first time since 1984, introducing a new design featuring the provincial motto “Strong and Free.”

Residents will determine the final look through an online public vote running from October 15 to November 5.
The redesigned plate, expected to be released in late 2026, will incorporate Alberta’s landscapes, industries, and symbols of provincial identity.
Eight proposed designs feature imagery such as the Three Sisters Mountains, Mount Lougheed, Moraine Lake, agricultural fields, and energy pumpjacks. The first voting phase will narrow the choices to four, followed by two, before a final round decides the winning concept. The selected design will be announced during the fall session of the legislature.

Premier Danielle Smith said the refresh will allow Albertans to express their pride and character through a new plate that represents the province’s “wide-open landscapes and entrepreneurial spirit.” Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally noted that the design will highlight Alberta’s independence and unity within Canada.
The updated plates will feature reflective technology to enhance visibility for law enforcement and automated systems in low-light conditions, meeting international standards for readability and counterfeit resistance.
Albertans may voluntarily replace their current plate for $28 once the new version becomes available, or receive it at no extra cost upon renewal of vehicle registration. Existing plates can continue to be used if they remain in good condition.
Alberta last modified its licence plate design over 40 years ago and transitioned to reflective plates with the same design in 2021.

I vote for license plate number 8
I would have rather had a vote on the slogan! Not a fan of “Strong and Free”
No need to be political on our license plate which obviously is a viewpoint of Premiere Smith’s Party. Wild Rose Country represents a more friendly description of our province.
What an absolute waste of time and resources.
License plate number 7 depicts Chief Mountain, which is situated in Montana.
