Alberta’s Top Baby Names For 2023

Olivia impressively marks its 11th consecutive year as the leading choice for girls, while Noah tops the boys’ list for the fifth straight year.

The province registered a total of 47,263 births last year, reflecting a wide array of naming inspirations.

Per the news release, parents have turned to nature for inspiration, choosing names such as Ivy, Rose, Juniper, Poppy, and Azalea for their daughters, and Wren, River, Meadow, and Flora for their sons.

Literature also played a role in the naming process, with an increase in names like Bennett, Sawyer, Juliet, and Atticus. Religious texts continue to influence with names like Eve, Mohammed, and Gabriel remaining popular.

The influence of popular culture is evident, with names derived from the realms of music, sports, and fairytales. New parents have named their children after iconic musicians like Aretha, Lennon, Presley, and Hendrix, athletes such as Beckham and Crosby, and beloved fairytale characters including Tiana, Jasmine, and Belle.

Among the girls, notable shifts include Evelyn, climbing to seventh place after being tied for 19th in 2022. Emily made a comeback into the top 10, and Violet entered the list for the first time in four decades, tying in ninth place with Ava and Emily.

The top 10 boys’ names remained consistent with previous years, albeit with some minor reordering. Historical trends show that Ethan, Liam, and Matthew have also enjoyed popularity in the past, holding the top position for several years.

As parents have up to a year to register their child’s birth, the final tally and rankings of Alberta’s 2023 baby names could still change.
