British Columbia to Give a 3rd Dose of COVID-19 Vaccines to All 12+, Releases Timeline

The British Columbia government has announced the timeline for providing a third dose or booster dose COVID-19 vaccines for eligible residents, prioritizing the elderly and most at-risk through to the December holiday and all 12+ beginning in January 2022.

Announcing the timeline, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said, “Our vaccines are highly effective. However, we are starting to see a gradual decline in protection over time. As a result, we are taking the proactive step of expanding boosters to everyone in our province. We’re starting with the people who need them most to continue to do all we can to keep people in B.C. safe from this virus and its variants.”

As per the news release, “the timing of invitations is based on risk and age (beginning oldest to youngest), with an interval of between six to eight months from the second dose.”

The government will invite residents who are registered with the Get Vaccinated System to book a shot as and when they become eligible.

The province will be giving mRNA vaccines. Those who received AstraZeneca for the first or second dose will receive Moderna or Pfizer for the booster.

Currently, Alberta is also providing a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine for all residents aged 75 and older and First Nations, Inuit and Métis people age 65 and older.

NACI has not yet recommended a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for the entire eligible population.
