Canadian COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination For International Travel: Use Your Provincial Vaccine Passport

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today the details of Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination that can be used for international travel.

The Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination or standardized national proof of vaccination follows the SMART Health Card standard which is used and recognized by many top travel destinations for Canadian travellers.

Vaccine passports issued by Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories follows the standardized national proof of vaccination and will serve as the Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination. The government says it will be also available in other provinces soon.

Justin Trudeau said in a statement, “Canadians have done their part by getting vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect themselves, their families, and their communities. As new vaccine requirements roll out for travellers, we are working to ensure that those who travel have access to a reliable, secure way to demonstrate their COVID-19 vaccinations, both at home and abroad. We will continue to work with provincial, territorial, and Indigenous partners so this standardized proof is available across Canada.”

The federal government says the Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination was designed with a common look that features the Canada wordmark. It will allow other countries and transportation providers, such as airlines and cruise ship operators, to recognize the proof as a trusted Canadian document regardless of the province or territory that issued it.

The government website says your provincial passport is considered a Canadian COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination if your version:

  • says “COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination” at the top of the document
  • includes
    • the official logos for
      • your province or territory
      • the Government of Canada (the word “Canada” with the Canadian flag above the last “a”)
    • your full name and date of birth
    • your COVID-19 vaccination history, including:
      • the number of dose(s)
      • the vaccine type(s), product name(s) and lot number
      • the date(s) you got your vaccination(s)
      • a SMART Health Cards QR code
  • is a bilingual document

The QR code on the proof of vaccination will include your COVID-19 vaccination history and may include additional information about the COVID-19 vaccine(s) you received. The health card number is not available on the code.
