Events Description

Bookmark, Charlottetown’s independent bookstore, is delighted to be launching award-winning Island author Nicholas Herring’s new novel Your Breath in Charcoal on Thursday, September 3rd at 7:00 pm in Studio 1 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Nicholas will be in conversation with UPEI professor and book lover Greg Doran. This event is free, and all are welcome.
Like Nicholas’ debut Some Hellish, which drew comparisons to David Adams Richards, Your Breath in Charcoal has its roots set on PEI. This beautifully crafted novel centers around Knickle, a young, working-class Islander with no friends, direction, or purpose in his life. When he drives to northern New Brunswick to pick up an acquaintance’s brother from a mental health hospital, the pair make a sudden decision to travel further west to try to find a life amidst the chaos of Upper Canada, and in the process Knickle experiences friendship, madness, love, and loss.

A hilarious, sensitive, and heady working-class odyssey rife with references to literature, film, and 90s music, Your Breath in Charcoal peers into the mind of its irrepressible and relentlessly quotable East Coast everyman. A follow-up to Some Hellish, Herring’s breathtaking Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize-winning debut novel, Your Breath in Charcoal marks yet another galvanizing entry into the East Coast literary canon.
Nicholas Herring graduated from St. Jerome’s University with an honours degree in English Literature and attended the University of Toronto, where he completed an MA in Creative Writing. He is the author of Some Hellish and his writing has also appeared in The Puritan and The Fiddlehead. He lives in Murray Harbour, Prince Edward Island, where he works as a fisherman and a carpenter. Your Breath in Charcoal is his second novel.
Dr. Greg Doran is a Professor at the University of Prince Edward Island, where he currently serves as the Associate Dean of Arts and Coordinator of Theatre Studies. In addition to his love of literature, Greg has an extensive record collection, covering a variety of periods and styles, and a diverse movie collection, from classics to cult films. He is an avid reader and can be regularly found at poetry events.
