Events Description

As winter crests and the mercury falls, everyone from your taxi driver to the music supervisor at the mall starts running timeless hits like “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night.” But for their Christmas Caravan show and album (which hit Billboard’s World Music Charts and The New York Times Hits List), Canada’s global groove wizards Sultans of String celebrate the holiday spirit with an adventurous musical trip around the world, featuring exuberant originals, world-music inspired classics, and seasonal favourites to warm your heart on a cold winter’s night.

From fiery fiddle tunes to a Caribbean sleigh ride, this surprising and delightful holiday fiesta heats up when Sultans of String bring their signature sound to well known gems such as “Little Drummer Boy,” “Jesu,” “Joy of Man’s Desiring,” a Turkish twist on “Greensleeves,” “Silent Night,” as well as a django-jazz inspired “Django Christmas,” and a Rumba-Flamenca fueled “Jingle Bells.”

Joining the Christmas Caravan are very special guests – vocalist Rebecca Campbell, Amanda Martinez, multi-instrumentalist Ken Whiteley, nyckelharpa player Saskia Tomkins, Kristine St-Pierre, and featuring special guests Oakville Children’s Choir.

Christmas Caravan is also a special awareness and fundraising bash for the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). As UNHCR fundraising partners, the band has raised over $11,000.

“Helping refugees is a cause we care about deeply – with more than 122 million people forcibly displaced worldwide in desperate need of our support. They have every right to live a safe and dignified life as much as we do,” says McKhool.

Sultans of String

Led by fiddle player and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal recipient Chris McKhool, these global groove wizards are an “energetic and exciting band with talent to burn!” (Maverick Magazine UK). Thrilling their audiences with their genre-hopping passport of Celtic reels, Flamenco, Django-jazz, and Middle Eastern rhythms, Sultans of String celebrate musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity. Fiery violin dances with rumba-flamenco guitar, while bass and nyckelharpa lay down unstoppable grooves. Throughout, acoustic strings meet electronic wizardry to create layers of sound.
