Events Description

Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory is introducing two extraordinary new residents: Flutter and Freckles, a pair of Mexican Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum).

The new “Mexican Axolotl” exhibit is now open, offering visitors an up-close look at one of the planet’s most fascinating Amphibians.

The exhibit invites guests to “meet the unique salamander that never grows up.” Axolotls are permanently aquatic and retain their juvenile features throughout their lives — a rare biological phenomenon known as neoteny.

Native only to the lakes of Xochimilco near Mexico City, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild due to pollution and habitat loss. V

isitors can explore engaging educational graphics highlighting the axolotl’s remarkable traits:

● Strictly Aquatic: Unlike most salamanders, axolotls spend their entire lives underwater.

● Cute Carnivores: They enjoy a diet of worms, small fish, and aquatic insects.

● Salamander Superpowers: Axolotls can regenerate lost limbs, gills, and even parts of their heart and brain.

● National Treasure: Revered in Mexican culture and mythology, axolotls are a national symbol of resilience.

The exhibit’s bright underwater design and low viewing window make it easy for children and adults alike to observe the axolotls up close as they explore their habitat. Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory’s new exhibit joins its lineup of live insects, turtles, tropical birds, and thousands of free-flying butterflies — all within a lush indoor tropical environment.
