Events Description

The Riverdale Hub Gallery is pleased to present “Dakiimi / To have land”, an exhibition by Amber Quail. Meet the artist on September 26th, with a reception from 2 to 4pm and artist talk at 3pm. Exhibition on view from September 15th to October 3rd, 2026.

Iconography in Western culture has been a central theme in Amber’s visual arts practice. Familiar household archetypes, reimagined through an Indigenous lens, invite viewers to consider alternate truths beyond those presented by the dominant culture.

An off-reserve member of Alderville First Nation, Amber’s practice is based in Tkaronto and South Algonquin. In her current solo exhibition, Dakiimi / To Have Land, the iconic board game Monopoly serves as both an anchor and a catalyst for reflection on land theft and greed. The objective of Monopoly—to acquire all the land and force other players into poverty until they can no longer participate—draws strong parallels to our shared history, particularly the colonial violence rooted in an insatiable appetite for land and natural resources.

These ideas are amplified through a vibrant combination of beadwork, mixed-media works, and paintings, inviting viewers to reflect on the enduring impacts of colonialism and to consider alternative perspectives on land, ownership, and power.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
