Events Description
Join us for a winter gathering alive with story, song and joyful young voices.
Known for its radiant sound and imaginative staging, the Canadian Children’s Opera Company (CCOC) is Canada’s only children’s opera company, training young performers in music, voice, drama and live performance. Its beloved Winter Concert offers families a warm introduction to theatre and song.
Inspired by Susan Cooper’s The Shortest Day, the concert follows midwinter traditions of fire, evergreen, singing and dancing against the dark. A staged telling of the poem is woven through choral music, bringing to life images of snowfall, candlelight, celebration and returning light.
CCOC’s young artists perform works by Marie-Claire Saindon, Katerina Gimon, Benjamin Britten, Amy Beach, John Beckwith and more, accompanied by live musicians. The program includes the world premiere of Soir d’hiver by CCOC pianist Stéphane Mayer and concludes with Gordon Lightfoot’s Song for a Winter’s Night, arranged by Chris and Charissa Bagan.
