CRTC Asks Inputs to Improve Internet and Cellphone Service Options for Canadians

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has opened three public consultations to enhance how Canadians select and manage Internet and cellphone plans.

Feedback from these consultations, open until January 9, 2025, will help the CRTC address barriers and improve transparency in the communications sector.

The first consultation examines measures to notify consumers when their plans or discounts are about to expire. This initiative aims to reduce unexpected billing increases by ensuring timely communication of upcoming price changes.

The second consultation addresses fees charged by service providers for changing or cancelling plans. Eliminating these fees could make it easier for consumers to switch to more competitive offers.

The third focuses on self-service options, exploring how tools for managing or cancelling plans could empower Canadians to choose better plans without needing provider intervention.

Canadians can participate by submitting comments through specific online forms for each consultation or by sending feedback via mail or fax to the CRTC. All submissions will become part of the public record and influence the CRTC’s decisions.

Additionally, the CRTC has announced plans to launch further consultations aimed at simplifying plan comparisons for Internet services. These efforts are part of the CRTC’s mandate to regulate the Canadian communications sector in the public interest, with decisions informed by public input.

How to Participate:

The CRTC is accepting comments until January 9, 2025. Those interested can participate by:
