The closure will include the adjacent gift shop and visitor information centre.

Per the news release, this decision follows the Chamber’s strategic planning process and aligns with the end of its land lease agreement with the Town of Drumheller.

Since its installation in 2000, Tyra has stood as a symbol of Drumheller’s identity, tourism industry, and ties to dinosaur history. The towering fiberglass and steel structure measures 25 metres in height and weighs 65 tonnes—making it over four times larger than a real Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The climbable structure offers panoramic views of Drumheller and the Badlands, accessed by climbing 106 stairs.

Chamber President Lana Phillips stated that while the decision was difficult, it allows the organization to refocus on its core mission of supporting local businesses and economic development. Executive Director Heather Bitz added that efforts will be made to commemorate Tyra’s legacy through storytelling and potential community projects.

Tyra has also played a role in supporting local initiatives through the WLD Legacy Fund. In 2024 alone, $40,000 was invested into community projects, with a similar amount planned for 2025. The Chamber has indicated that the fund’s future will be reassessed as the closure date approaches.

Relocation of Tyra is not being considered due to the structure’s size and aging materials. Once the lease ends, the Chamber will decommission the structure and vacate the site. Future use of the land will be determined by the Town of Drumheller.

The Chamber is planning opportunities for the public to celebrate and share memories of Tyra before her departure. Community engagement and tourism planning will continue in collaboration with Travel Drumheller and other partners to ensure the town remains a destination.
